Horses sweat to cool down, but when your horse is dripping wet without exercise, high heat, or an obvious trigger, something else is going on. Unexplained sweating (called hyperhidrosis) can signal anything from pain and stress to hormonal disease, and the cause matters because some of these conditions are emergencies while others are chronic and manageable.
Pain Is the Most Common Hidden Cause
Horses are prey animals, hardwired to mask discomfort. A horse in moderate to severe pain will often sweat visibly before it shows more dramatic signs like rolling or pawing. Colic is the classic example. Excessive sweating is one of the earliest and most reliable indicators of abdominal pain, sometimes appearing before changes in appetite or gut sounds.
If your horse is sweating and also showing any of these behaviors, pain is the likely driver:
- Turning to look at the flank or belly
- Pawing or kicking at the abdomen
- Lying down and getting up repeatedly
- Grinding teeth or curling the lip
- Elevated heart rate or breathing rate
- Refusing food or water
- Changes in manure (none at all, very dry, mucus-covered, or diarrhea)
Some horses are stoic enough that sweating plus a slightly elevated heart rate is all you’ll see. If you notice unexplained sweating with even one of those signs, treat it as a potential colic and contact your vet promptly. Time matters with intestinal problems.
Stress and Fear Sweating
Adrenaline triggers sweating in horses through a specific receptor type on their sweat glands (the same type targeted by adrenaline inhalers in humans). This means a horse can break out in a full-body sweat from fear, anxiety, or excitement without moving a muscle. Trailering, new environments, separation from herdmates, farrier visits, or even hearing unfamiliar sounds can all produce this response.
Stress sweat tends to appear suddenly, often concentrated on the neck, flanks, and between the hind legs. It may feel more “lathery” than exercise sweat. The key distinction: once the stressor is removed, the sweating resolves within 15 to 30 minutes. If it doesn’t, something else is happening.
Cushing’s Disease (PPID)
If your horse is older (typically 15+) and sweating seems to happen regularly without a clear pattern, Cushing’s disease is worth investigating. The formal name is Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction, or PPID. It’s caused by the gradual death of specific nerve cells in the brain that normally keep the pituitary gland in check. Without that regulation, the pituitary overproduces a cascade of hormones that disrupt nearly every system in the body.
Hyperhidrosis is a recognized clinical sign of PPID. It tends to appear alongside other hallmarks:
- A long, curly coat that doesn’t shed normally (the single most recognizable sign)
- Muscle wasting, especially along the topline
- A potbelly appearance
- Excessive drinking and urinating
- Abnormal fat deposits above the eyes or along the crest
- Recurring infections (skin, hoof, respiratory)
- Laminitis episodes
Not every horse with PPID shows every symptom, and sweating alone isn’t enough for a diagnosis. But if you’re seeing two or three items from that list, a blood test can confirm the condition. PPID is manageable with daily medication, and treatment often reduces sweating significantly.
Fever and Infection
A horse running a fever will sweat as its body tries to regulate temperature. Normal rectal temperature for an adult horse is 99.0 to 100.8°F (37.2 to 38.2°C). Anything above that range, especially above 102°F, indicates fever, and sweating in a resting horse with a fever points to an active infection or inflammatory process.
Several infectious diseases specifically list excessive sweating as a symptom. West Nile virus, for example, can cause sweating along with neurological signs like stumbling, head pressing, or muscle twitching. Respiratory infections, abscesses, and tick-borne diseases can all produce fever-driven sweating. Taking a rectal temperature is the single fastest way to narrow down whether your horse’s sweating is fever-related, and it’s something you can do at the barn before calling a vet.
Toxic Fescue Grass
If your horse grazes on tall fescue pasture, the grass itself could be the problem. Most tall fescue harbors an internal fungus that produces a toxin called ergovaline. This compound constricts blood vessels and disrupts the brain’s ability to regulate body temperature. When the ambient temperature rises above about 88°F (31°C), affected horses can’t cool themselves efficiently and may sweat excessively, pant, or become lethargic.
In cooler weather, the same toxin causes the opposite effect: cold extremities and poor circulation. If your horse’s unexplained sweating correlates with warm days and access to fescue pasture, fescue toxicosis is a real possibility. The fix is either replacing the pasture with an endophyte-free fescue variety or moving the horse off fescue entirely during hot months.
Partial Anhidrosis Can Look Like Random Sweating
This one is counterintuitive. Anhidrosis is the inability to sweat, but it doesn’t always knock out every sweat gland at once. Some horses lose function in most areas while retaining the ability to sweat in a few patches, typically under the mane, behind the ears, or between the hind legs. The result can look bizarre: a horse that’s dry over most of its body but dripping in one or two spots, even at rest.
If you’re noticing sweating that seems oddly localized while the rest of the horse stays dry in conditions that should produce a full-body sweat, you may actually be looking at a horse that’s failing to sweat, not one that’s sweating too much. This is a serious thermoregulation problem, especially in hot and humid climates.
Heat Stress and Overheating
Sometimes the “no reason” is environmental, and the horse is hotter than you realize. High humidity is the hidden factor here. A horse can tolerate 90°F in dry air but struggle at 80°F with 80% humidity because sweat can’t evaporate. Horses in poor fitness, those that are overweight, or horses with thick winter coats retained into spring are especially vulnerable.
A resting respiratory rate above 40 breaths per minute that doesn’t come down within 10 to 30 minutes is a sign of genuine overheating, according to UC Davis veterinary guidelines. Combine that with profuse sweating, and you’re looking at a horse that needs shade, airflow, and cool water applied to large blood vessels (neck, inside the legs) right away.
What to Check First
When you find your horse sweating without an obvious cause, a quick assessment can help you triage the situation. Take a rectal temperature. Count respirations for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Look at the gums: they should be pink and moist, and if you press a finger against them, color should return within two seconds. Check for gut sounds on both sides of the belly. Note whether the sweating is all over or patchy, and whether the horse is eating, drinking, and passing manure normally.
A horse that’s sweating with a normal temperature, normal breathing, pink gums, good gut sounds, and no behavioral changes may simply be reacting to a stressor you didn’t notice, or dealing with higher humidity than you expected. A horse that’s sweating with an elevated temperature, rapid breathing, absent gut sounds, or any sign of pain needs veterinary attention that day.
For horses that sweat heavily due to work or heat, replacing lost minerals matters. A general guideline from Kentucky Equine Research: roughly 60 grams (about 2 ounces) of a balanced electrolyte supplement per hour of exercise in moderate weather, doubling that rate in hot conditions. Horses doing minimal work in comfortable temperatures need far less, around 60 to 120 grams per day. Electrolytes won’t fix pathological sweating, but they prevent the dehydration and mineral imbalances that make things worse.
