A healthy cat drinks roughly one cup of water per day for every 10 pounds of body weight. If your male cat is consistently exceeding that, something is driving him to drink more, and the cause ranges from a simple diet change to a serious medical condition. Clinically, anything above about 45 milliliters per kilogram of body weight per day (roughly 1.5 cups for a 10-pound cat) is considered excessive.
How to Tell If It’s Actually Excessive
Cats are creatures of habit, so a noticeable increase in trips to the water bowl is worth paying attention to. But before assuming the worst, consider a few baseline factors. A cat who just switched from canned food to dry kibble will drink significantly more water on his own. Cats fed exclusively wet food consume about twice as much total water as cats on dry food alone, because canned food is roughly 75% moisture while kibble is only about 10%. That means a cat who recently lost access to wet food may suddenly look like a heavy drinker even though his body is simply compensating.
Hot weather, increased activity, and a saltier diet can also bump up water intake temporarily. If none of those apply and you’re seeing your cat at the bowl constantly, producing large volumes of urine, or soaking through the litter box faster than usual, that pattern points to a medical cause.
Kidney Disease: The Most Common Culprit
Chronic kidney disease is the single most frequent reason older cats start drinking excessively. It affects a large percentage of cats over 10, and male cats are no exception. The mechanism is straightforward: as the kidneys lose functional tissue, they can no longer reabsorb water efficiently. The result is large volumes of dilute urine, and the cat drinks more to keep up with that fluid loss.
The frustrating part is that standard blood markers like creatinine don’t rise above normal until about 75% of kidney function is already gone. A newer marker called SDMA can flag declining kidney function earlier, which is why many vets now include it in routine bloodwork for middle-aged and older cats. Urine concentration also matters. If your cat’s urine specific gravity falls below 1.035 consistently, especially alongside rising blood values, that points to kidneys that can no longer do their filtering job properly.
Kidney disease is staged from 1 (mild, often no visible symptoms) to 4 (severe). Cats in the early stages can live comfortably for years with dietary management and hydration support, so catching it before your cat is visibly sick makes a real difference.
Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes is the other big diagnosis behind a cat who can’t stop drinking. Male cats, especially those who are overweight or inactive, are at higher risk. In a diabetic cat, blood sugar climbs above the kidney’s ability to reclaim glucose from urine. In cats, that threshold is around 250 to 300 mg/dL. Once blood sugar exceeds that level, glucose spills into the urine and pulls water along with it, producing floods of sugary urine and relentless thirst to match.
You’ll typically notice three things together: increased drinking, increased urination, and weight loss despite a normal or even ravenous appetite. Some diabetic cats also develop a distinctive flat-footed walking posture in the hind legs, caused by nerve damage from prolonged high blood sugar. A simple blood and urine test at the vet can confirm or rule out diabetes quickly.
Hyperthyroidism
An overactive thyroid gland is extremely common in cats over eight or nine years old. The thyroid floods the body with hormones that crank up metabolism across every organ system, including the kidneys. This accelerated filtration increases urine output, which in turn drives thirst. Most hyperthyroid cats also lose weight rapidly, seem restless or vocal, eat more than usual, and may have a noticeably fast heart rate. A blood test measuring thyroid hormone levels is the standard way to diagnose it, and the condition is very treatable.
Urinary Issues Specific to Male Cats
The reason your search specifies “male” matters. Male cats have a narrow urethra that makes them uniquely prone to urinary blockages, a condition where crystals, mucus plugs, or inflammation physically prevent urine from leaving the bladder. This is a life-threatening emergency: a completely blocked cat develops dangerous toxin buildup within 36 to 48 hours and can die within about 72 hours without treatment.
A blocked cat typically strains in the litter box repeatedly without producing urine, may cry or vocalize, and often has a hard, painful abdomen. Owners frequently mistake these signs for constipation. While a blockage itself doesn’t directly cause increased thirst, the underlying lower urinary tract inflammation that leads to blockages can change a cat’s drinking and urination patterns. If your male cat is drinking more and also making frequent, unproductive trips to the litter box, that combination warrants an urgent vet visit.
Less Common Causes Worth Knowing
A handful of rarer conditions also drive excessive thirst. Cushing’s syndrome (overproduction of cortisol) exists in cats but is diagnosed infrequently. When it does occur, the excessive drinking usually stems from concurrent diabetes rather than the cortisol itself. Liver disease, certain cancers, and high blood calcium levels can all increase water consumption too, though each of these is far less common than kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism.
Some medications also cause increased thirst as a side effect. If your cat recently started a new prescription and you’ve noticed a change in drinking, mention it to your vet.
What the Vet Visit Looks Like
If your cat’s water intake has genuinely increased, the diagnostic process is usually quick and not very invasive. Expect a blood panel that checks kidney values (creatinine, SDMA, and blood urea), blood sugar, thyroid hormone levels, and liver markers. A urine sample will measure how well the kidneys are concentrating urine and check for glucose, protein, or signs of infection. Together, these two tests catch the vast majority of causes.
Before the appointment, it helps to note roughly how much water your cat goes through in 24 hours. You can measure this by filling the bowl to a marked level in the morning and checking what’s left the next day. Even a rough estimate gives the vet useful context. Also note any changes in appetite, weight, litter box habits, energy level, or behavior. These details narrow the list of possibilities before a single test is run.
What You Can Do at Home Right Now
While you’re arranging a vet visit, make sure fresh water is always available. Never restrict water from a cat who is drinking excessively. If the kidneys or blood sugar are driving that thirst, limiting water access will cause dehydration dangerously fast. Keep the litter box clean so you can monitor urine output, and watch for any straining, blood in the urine, or inability to urinate, all of which escalate the urgency, particularly in a male cat.
