Why Is My Pee Dark Brown? Causes and When to Worry

Dark brown urine is most commonly a sign of significant dehydration, but it can also point to liver problems, muscle injury, kidney inflammation, or medication side effects. The fastest way to narrow down the cause is to drink two or three glasses of water and check whether your urine lightens within a few hours. If it doesn’t, something other than dehydration is likely involved.

Dehydration Is the Most Common Cause

Normal, healthy urine ranges from pale straw to a medium yellow color. That yellow tint comes from a pigment called urochrome, which your body produces naturally. When you’re well hydrated, urochrome is diluted and your urine stays light. When fluid levels drop, the same pigment becomes concentrated in less water, pushing the color from amber to honey to a dark syrup or brown ale shade.

This can happen faster than you’d expect. A hot day, an intense workout, a stomach bug with vomiting or diarrhea, or simply forgetting to drink enough water can all push you into that darker range. If dehydration is the culprit, rehydrating should bring your urine back to a pale or medium yellow within a few hours. If it doesn’t lighten up after you’ve had plenty of fluids, something else is going on.

Liver and Bile Duct Problems

Your body constantly breaks down old red blood cells, producing a yellow substance called bilirubin. Normally, your liver processes bilirubin and channels it into bile, which flows through small tubes (bile ducts) into your intestines to help digest food. A healthy liver removes most bilirubin from your bloodstream efficiently.

When the liver is damaged or the bile ducts are blocked, bilirubin builds up in the blood and eventually spills into your urine, turning it dark brown or tea-colored. Conditions that cause this include hepatitis (viral infection of the liver), cirrhosis (long-term liver scarring), and gallstones or tumors that physically block bile ducts. Other clues that bilirubin is the problem: yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale or clay-colored stools, itchy skin, or pain in the upper right side of your abdomen.

Muscle Breakdown (Rhabdomyolysis)

When muscle tissue is severely damaged, a protein from inside muscle cells called myoglobin floods into the bloodstream and passes through the kidneys, turning urine a dark tea or cola color. This condition, called rhabdomyolysis, is more common than many people realize. It can be triggered by extreme exercise (especially if you pushed far beyond your usual intensity), crush injuries, heatstroke, or prolonged immobilization.

The three hallmark symptoms are dark urine, muscle pain that feels more severe than expected, and unusual weakness or fatigue. Symptoms don’t always appear immediately. They can develop hours or even days after the initial muscle injury. Rhabdomyolysis is serious because the flood of muscle proteins can damage the kidneys. If you notice dark brown urine after an unusually hard workout or any significant physical trauma, and it comes with muscle pain, that combination warrants prompt medical attention.

Kidney Inflammation

Your kidneys filter blood through tiny clusters of blood vessels called glomeruli. When these structures become inflamed, a condition called glomerulonephritis, blood and protein leak into your urine. The result is urine that looks dark, rust-colored, or brown. It doesn’t look like bright red blood; instead, the color tends to be murky and brownish because the blood has been partially processed by the kidneys.

This condition sometimes develops slowly enough that people don’t notice any symptoms until a routine urine test picks up abnormalities. Other signs can include swelling in the face, hands, or feet, and elevated blood pressure. Some forms of glomerulonephritis follow infections, while others are linked to autoimmune conditions. A kidney biopsy is typically needed to confirm the specific type.

Medications and Supplements

Several common medications can darken urine to a brown or brownish-black shade as a harmless side effect. The most well-known culprits include certain antibiotics used for urinary tract and other infections, antimalarial drugs, and laxatives that contain senna (a plant-based ingredient found in many over-the-counter constipation remedies). If you recently started a new medication and noticed your urine changed color, check the drug’s information sheet. Medication-related color changes are typically harmless and reverse once you stop taking the drug.

Porphyria: A Rare but Notable Cause

Porphyria is a group of rare genetic disorders that interfere with the production of heme, a component of hemoglobin in red blood cells. When the process goes wrong, substances called porphyrins build up in the body and can turn urine red or brown. Most forms of porphyria are inherited from one or both parents. Beyond dark urine, symptoms depend on the type: some forms primarily cause nervous system problems like abdominal pain, nausea, and tingling in the limbs, while others mainly affect the skin, causing blistering, itching, and unusual hair growth in sun-exposed areas. Porphyria is uncommon enough that it’s rarely the first explanation for dark urine, but it’s worth knowing about if other causes have been ruled out.

How to Tell What’s Causing It

Start with the simplest test: hydrate well for several hours and see if the color returns to normal. If it does, dehydration was likely the issue, and the fix is straightforward.

If your urine stays dark despite good hydration, pay attention to accompanying symptoms. Yellowing skin or eyes and right-sided abdominal pain point toward the liver. Severe muscle soreness after intense physical activity or injury suggests rhabdomyolysis. Swelling in the face and legs raises the possibility of kidney inflammation. A new medication or supplement is one of the easiest causes to identify, since the timing usually lines up clearly.

Dark brown urine that persists beyond a day, comes with pain, fever, or any yellowing of the skin, or appears after a severe physical event like a crush injury or extreme exertion needs medical evaluation. A simple urine test can detect bilirubin, blood, or muscle proteins, and blood work can check liver and kidney function. These tests are quick, widely available, and give doctors a clear picture of what’s driving the color change.
