A separate nationally representative survey of 6,100 U.S. parents found that 46 percent incorrectly answered at least one of two straightforward medication-related questions. These aren’t unusual edge cases. They reflect how easily routine number tasks can go wrong when someone is tired, stressed, or simply not confident with fractions and measurements.

Beyond dosing, low numeracy distorts how people perceive medical risks and benefits. It reduces the ability to interpret screening results, makes people more susceptible to how information is framed (a treatment described as “90 percent survival” feels very different from “10 percent mortality,” even though they’re identical), and leads to inconsistent treatment choices. Even highly educated adults and some health professionals struggle with probability and risk-related math, which means this isn’t just a problem for people who think of themselves as “bad at math.”

A study published in PLOS One put a dollar figure on it: for every one-point increase on an eight-item numeracy test, individuals reported $4,062 more in annual income, even after controlling for education and verbal intelligence. The gap between the lowest and highest scorers on that same test was roughly $36,000 per year. That means numeracy predicts earning power independent of how much school you completed or how well you handle language. It’s a distinct skill with its own economic payoff.

Numeracy also strengthens your ability to learn new financial concepts. In debt literacy interventions, participants with higher baseline numeracy absorbed and retained the material more effectively. Nutrition labels are designed to help consumers make informed choices, but they require a level of numerical reasoning that trips up a surprising number of people. The core problem is serving sizes. Most packaged foods contain more than one serving, so you need to multiply the listed values to figure out what you’re actually consuming if you eat the whole package.

Study after study shows most people can’t do this reliably. In one survey, 83 percent of adults couldn’t use a standard nutrition label to determine the total calories in a soda bottle containing more than one serving. Among college students, 94 percent failed to calculate the calories per container of bread. A broader study across ages 18 to 80 found that 68 percent couldn’t determine the carbohydrates in a 20-ounce soda with 2.5 servings per bottle. These aren’t trick questions. They require basic multiplication, but the context, small print, and unfamiliar units create enough friction that errors become the norm rather than the exception.

This has real dietary consequences. If you think a bottle of juice has 120 calories when it actually has 300, your mental calorie count for the day is off by enough to undermine any nutrition goal you’re working toward.

Studies consistently show that people interpret numerical information more accurately when it’s displayed graphically, on number lines, icon arrays, or simple charts, rather than in raw tables of numbers.
