What’s clear is that the product has quietly disappeared from many major retailers, leaving loyal users scrambling for alternatives.

What We Know About the Shortage

Peroxyl has cycled in and out of availability over the past couple of years, with some retailers listing it as “out of stock” and others removing the product page entirely. This pattern is consistent with either a quiet discontinuation or a prolonged manufacturing disruption, but Colgate-Palmolive has not confirmed either scenario publicly. When a large consumer goods company phases out a product, it often happens this way: inventory slowly dries up without a formal announcement, and the product simply stops appearing on shelves.

Some online marketplaces still list Peroxyl at inflated prices from third-party sellers, which is a common sign that retail supply has been cut off at the distributor level. If you see it available at two or three times its normal price, that’s resellers offloading remaining stock.

Peroxyl was a 1.5% hydrogen peroxide oral rinse marketed as a mouth sore cleanser. The foaming action of hydrogen peroxide helped loosen debris from sore tissue, which is why dentists and orthodontists commonly recommended it after braces adjustments or oral surgery.

It wasn’t a daily-use mouthwash in the way most people think of products like Listerine. It was designed for short-term, targeted use when you had an active sore or irritation in your mouth.

Store-Brand Alternatives

The good news is that Peroxyl’s formula was never unique. The active ingredient, 1.5% hydrogen peroxide, is simple and widely available in generic form. Walgreens, for example, sells its own “Sore Mouth Cleanser” that explicitly states it compares to the active ingredient in Colgate Peroxyl Mouth Sore Rinse. CVS and other pharmacy chains carry similar store-brand versions.

When shopping for a substitute, look for any oral rinse labeled as an “oral debriding agent” or “mouth sore rinse” with 1.5% hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. These products are functionally identical to Peroxyl. The flavor and texture may differ slightly, but the therapeutic effect is the same.

Making Your Own at Home

You can also make a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse at home using the standard 3% hydrogen peroxide sold at any pharmacy. The target concentration is 1.5%, which matches what Peroxyl contained. The ratio is simple: mix one part 3% hydrogen peroxide with two parts water. For a single use, that looks like one tablespoon (15 mL) of hydrogen peroxide combined with two tablespoons (30 mL) of water.

Swish the mixture around the affected area for about 60 seconds, then spit it out. Don’t swallow it. You can use this a few times a day for short periods while a sore heals. The main thing you lose compared to the commercial product is the mint flavoring, so the taste is less pleasant. Adding a drop of food-grade peppermint oil can help if that bothers you.

Safety Considerations

At the 1.5% concentration found in Peroxyl and its equivalents, hydrogen peroxide is well-studied and considered safe for short-term oral use. Research published in the journal International Dental Journal found good evidence for the safety of low-concentration hydrogen peroxide used in self-administered oral care products, with no damage to oral soft or hard tissues.

Problems arise at higher concentrations or with prolonged, daily use over many weeks. Hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive and can irritate or damage oral tissues when the concentration is too high or exposure lasts too long. Stick to the 1.5% dilution, use it only while you have an active sore or irritation, and stop once healing is underway. If you’re making your own, don’t skip the dilution step and rinse with straight 3% peroxide, as that’s stronger than what oral rinse products contain and can cause tissue irritation.
