That annoying flutter in the corner of your eye is almost certainly eyelid myokymia, a harmless and very common muscle twitch. It happens when the small muscle fibers around your eye fire off involuntary signals, creating a tiny, repetitive spasm you can feel but that other people usually can’t see. It typically goes away on its own within a few days, and the cause is almost always something fixable in your daily routine.
What’s Actually Happening in Your Eyelid
Your eyelids are connected to your brain through the facial nerve, one of twelve cranial nerves. When something disrupts the signaling along that nerve, the muscle around your eye can misfire, producing the rhythmic twitching you feel. It’s the same basic phenomenon as a twitch in your calf or thumb, just more noticeable because eyelid skin is so thin and sensitive.
The twitching usually affects only one eye at a time, and it tends to come and go in bursts. You might notice it for a few seconds, then nothing for an hour, then it starts up again. This on-and-off pattern is normal and is what separates a run-of-the-mill twitch from something more serious.

What About Magnesium?
You’ll find countless recommendations online to take magnesium supplements for eye twitching. The idea is widespread, but the clinical evidence doesn’t support it. A study published on ResearchGate that specifically investigated the link between low magnesium and eyelid myokymia found no significant difference in magnesium levels (or calcium or phosphate) between people with twitching and people without. Despite its popularity as a remedy, magnesium deficiency does not appear to be a meaningful cause of eyelid twitching for most people.
How to Stop the Twitch
Since the twitch is driven by overstimulated nerve signals and tired muscles, the most effective strategies target both. A warm washcloth placed gently over the affected eye helps relax the muscle fibers. You can also lightly massage the area around the twitching with your fingertips while applying the warmth. This combination works well for immediate, short-term relief.
For longer-term fixes, work through the trigger list above. Cut your caffeine intake for a few days. Prioritize sleep. If you’re under unusual stress, even basic stress-reduction efforts (a walk, better breaks during work) can help quiet the nerve signals. When a Twitch Means Something More
The vast majority of eye twitches are benign and temporary. But there are two less common conditions worth knowing about, because they feel different in specific ways.
Blepharospasm involves frequent, forceful blinking and uncontrollable eye closure, sometimes in both eyes. In severe cases, people can’t open their eyes for several minutes at a time. This is a distinct neurological condition, not just an amplified version of a normal twitch.
Hemifacial spasm causes twitching around the eye on one side but also pulls in other muscles on the same side of the face, like the cheek or the corner of the mouth. If your twitch has spread beyond just the eyelid, this is the key distinction to watch for.
