Peeling skin on the bottom of your feet is almost always caused by one of a handful of common conditions: a fungal infection, excessive moisture, dry skin, or a reaction to something your feet are in contact with. Less often, it signals a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, or a nutritional gap. The cause usually becomes clear once you look at the pattern of peeling, whether it itches, and what else is happening on your skin.
Athlete’s Foot Is the Most Common Cause
Fungal infection is the first thing to rule out. Athlete’s foot is caused by dermatophytes, the same group of fungi behind ringworm and jock itch. Most people picture it as red, cracked skin between the toes, and that is the classic presentation. But a second pattern, sometimes called “moccasin-type” athlete’s foot, shows up as dry, scaly skin across the bottom and sides of the foot. It can look a lot like simple dryness, which is why many people don’t recognize it as fungal.
The giveaway is usually mild itching plus gradual spreading. You might notice it on one foot before the other. If both soles are evenly dry and flaky with no itching, plain dryness or another cause is more likely. Over-the-counter antifungal creams clear most cases in two to four weeks, though the moccasin type can be stubborn and sometimes needs a prescription oral antifungal.
Too Much Moisture Breaks Skin Down
Feet that sweat heavily create their own peeling problem. When skin stays damp for hours inside shoes and socks, the outermost layer absorbs water and turns white, soft, and fragile. This is called maceration, and it makes the skin peel in sheets once it finally dries out. People with heavy foot sweating also face a higher risk of contact dermatitis, blistering, and secondary infections from bacteria, fungi, and viruses that thrive in the moisture.
One telltale sign of sweat-related damage is pitted keratolysis, a bacterial infection that creates tiny crater-like pits across the sole. It often comes with a noticeable odor. Moisture-wicking socks, breathable shoes, and letting your feet air out regularly can make a real difference. If sweating is severe, an antiperspirant designed for feet or a prescription-strength option can help.
Contact Dermatitis From Shoes
Your shoes themselves can be the problem. Leather is tanned with chromium salts, which are present in more than 90% of leather footwear and are a well-known skin allergen. Rubber soles and insoles contain vulcanization chemicals that also trigger reactions. Even the adhesives holding your shoes together contain potential allergens, and antimicrobial treatments used to prevent mold during shipping can irritate skin.
Shoe-related contact dermatitis typically appears where the material presses against skin, so the sole, the top of the foot near straps, or around the toe box. It can cause redness, peeling, and sometimes small blisters. The pattern often matches the shape of the shoe component causing the reaction. If peeling started after you switched to new shoes or a new brand, that connection is worth investigating. Patch testing through a dermatologist can identify the specific allergen.
Eczema and Psoriasis on the Soles
Dyshidrotic eczema causes small, intensely itchy blisters on the soles and sides of the feet (and sometimes the palms). The blisters are deep-set, firm, and often described as looking like tapioca pearls under the skin. Once they dry out, the overlying skin peels and cracks. Flares tend to come and go, and stress, heat, and allergens can set them off.
Palmoplantar psoriasis looks different. It produces thick, scaly plaques on the soles, sometimes with small sterile pustules. If you have psoriasis elsewhere on your body, nail pitting, or a family history of psoriasis, that raises the likelihood. The two conditions can look similar enough that a dermatologist sometimes needs a skin biopsy to tell them apart. The treatments differ, so getting the right diagnosis matters.
Dry Skin and Environmental Causes
Sometimes the answer is simpler than a medical condition. The soles of your feet have no oil glands, so they rely entirely on sweat glands for moisture. In dry climates, during winter, or if you wear open-back shoes that let skin dry out, the soles can become thick and flaky. Hot showers, harsh soaps, and walking barefoot on rough surfaces all strip moisture further.
This type of peeling is usually symmetrical on both feet, not itchy, and worst around the heels where skin is thickest. A thick moisturizer or cream containing urea applied after bathing, when skin is still slightly damp, is the most effective fix. Petroleum-based ointments sealed under cotton socks overnight can soften severely cracked skin within a week or two.
Keratolysis Exfoliativa
This lesser-known condition causes painless, superficial peeling that starts as small air-filled blisters. The blisters burst on their own, leaving expanding rings of peeling skin with a raw, pinkish center. It most commonly affects the hands but can appear on the feet as well. The peeled areas lose their normal moisture barrier and may become dry and cracked, sometimes with multiple overlapping layers of peeling skin.
The key feature that sets it apart: it is not generally itchy. It tends to worsen in warm weather and with friction. There is no standard cure, but keeping the skin moisturized helps it resolve faster. It is diagnosed by appearance alone, without blood tests or biopsies.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Skin changes on the feet can occasionally reflect what is missing from your diet, though this is far less common in well-nourished populations. Zinc deficiency causes eczema-like plaques in areas that experience friction and pressure, which includes the soles. Vitamin A deficiency produces rough, dry, bumpy skin (sometimes called “toad skin”) on the extremities. Severe niacin (vitamin B3) deficiency causes sharply defined, darkened, thickened skin on the hands and feet in a pattern known as the “glove and boot” of pellagra.
These deficiencies are most likely in people with restricted diets, malabsorption conditions, or heavy alcohol use. If peeling skin comes alongside fatigue, hair changes, or unexplained weight loss, a blood panel checking nutritional levels is reasonable.
Signs That Need Prompt Attention
Most peeling on the soles is not dangerous, but cracked, broken skin is an open door for bacteria. Watch for skin that becomes increasingly red, swollen, warm, or painful. These are signs of a secondary infection like cellulitis. Skin that changes color to a deep red, purple, or brown, feels hard to the touch, or develops blisters that burst and leave a raw surface warrants prompt medical evaluation. Fever, chills, or a general feeling of being unwell alongside worsening foot skin suggests the infection has moved deeper.
People with diabetes need to be especially cautious with any foot skin changes. Reduced sensation in the feet means cracks and infections can progress without pain as a warning signal. Chemical foot peels, which are popular for removing calluses, are specifically not recommended for anyone with diabetes, open sores, eczema, or psoriasis.
Narrowing Down Your Cause
A few questions can help you sort through the possibilities:
- Does it itch? Itching points toward athlete’s foot, eczema, or contact dermatitis. No itching makes dry skin, keratolysis exfoliativa, or psoriasis more likely.
- Is it on one foot or both? Fungal infections often start on one foot. Dry skin and eczema tend to be symmetrical.
- Are there blisters? Small deep blisters suggest eczema. Superficial air-filled blisters that leave rings of peeling skin suggest keratolysis exfoliativa.
- Did it start with new shoes? Contact dermatitis follows the pattern of the shoe material touching your skin.
- Is the peeling worst around the heels? Simple dryness concentrates where skin is thickest and most exposed.
If over-the-counter moisturizers and antifungal creams haven’t improved things in three to four weeks, or if the peeling is spreading, cracking deeply, or interfering with walking, a dermatologist can make a definitive diagnosis and match you with the right treatment.
