Vaping isn’t harmless here either. Research from Harvard found that common e-cigarette flavorings, particularly chemicals like diacetyl, alter gene expression related to cilia production and function. Damaged or sluggish cilia mean mucus pools in your throat instead of being swept away.

Dry indoor air compounds the problem. When humidity drops too low, mucus loses moisture and thickens. Keeping your home humidity between 30% and 50% helps your airways stay hydrated enough to clear mucus efficiently. A simple hygrometer (available for a few dollars at hardware stores) lets you monitor this.

Hydration and Mucus Thickness

How well-hydrated your airways are directly affects how easily mucus moves. Research published in the European Respiratory Journal found that the depth of the fluid layer coating your airways is one of the key predictors of mucus transport speed. When that layer thins out, mucus viscosity spikes and clearance slows dramatically. In people with chronic lung disease, mucus can become over 100 times more viscous than normal, largely because it contains a higher percentage of solids and less water.

What Phlegm Color Tells You (and Doesn’t)

You’ve probably heard that green or yellow phlegm means a bacterial infection. The reality is more nuanced. A study in Clinical Microbiology and Infection found that when patients self-reported their phlegm color, it was a poor predictor of bacterial infection, with only 39% specificity. Even when a clinician assessed the color using a standardized chart, specificity was just 52%. Clear or white phlegm is generally considered mucoid (non-infected), while yellow, green, or brown phlegm is considered purulent (potentially infected), but the overlap is significant.

Color changes often reflect the concentration of white blood cells and enzymes your immune system sends to fight irritation, whether that irritation comes from a virus, bacteria, or even just prolonged inflammation. Green phlegm after a cold, for instance, is common and doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics. Duration matters more than color: phlegm that persists beyond 10 to 14 days, gets progressively worse, or comes with fever and facial pain is more likely to involve a bacterial sinus infection.

Practical Ways to Reduce Throat Phlegm

The most effective approach depends on the underlying cause, but several strategies help across the board:

  • Expectorants containing guaifenesin work by thinning mucus so it’s easier to cough up. Drinking plenty of water alongside them improves their effectiveness.

If allergies are the driver, antihistamines and nasal corticosteroid sprays target the root cause. If silent reflux is suspected, dietary changes like avoiding late meals, reducing acidic and fatty foods, and not lying down within a few hours of eating can make a meaningful difference.

When Phlegm Signals Something Bigger

Occasional throat phlegm during a cold or allergy season is normal. But phlegm that persists for weeks without an obvious cause, phlegm streaked with blood, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or shortness of breath and fatigue all warrant a medical evaluation. Persistent phlegm when you’re otherwise healthy can sometimes point to underlying conditions like chronic sinusitis, asthma, or (rarely) something more serious that’s worth investigating early.
