Why Is Wegovy Out of Stock? What’s Behind the Shortage

Wegovy experienced widespread stock shortages from 2022 through early 2025, driven by demand that far outpaced Novo Nordisk’s ability to manufacture the drug. As of February 2025, the FDA officially declared the semaglutide injection shortage resolved, meaning supply has largely stabilized. But the road to get here was long, and some patients may still encounter availability issues at individual pharmacies as inventory levels catch up.

Demand Grew Faster Than Supply

The core problem was simple: far more people wanted Wegovy than Novo Nordisk could produce. When the drug launched in 2021 as the first semaglutide product approved specifically for weight management, demand surged almost immediately. Novo Nordisk itself has described the situation as “unprecedented global demand” tied to escalating obesity rates worldwide. The company had to make strategic decisions about which regions and patient groups to prioritize, effectively rationing supply.

Prescription volume for GLP-1 drugs as a class exploded between 2022 and 2024. Wegovy’s popularity was amplified by widespread media coverage, celebrity endorsements, and social media discussion that turned semaglutide into a household name almost overnight. That kind of cultural momentum created a demand spike no pharmaceutical manufacturer could have anticipated when planning production years earlier.

Manufacturing Bottlenecks Were the Real Constraint

Making injectable medications like Wegovy is a complex, multi-step process. The drug itself must be produced, then loaded into pre-filled injection pens through a process called fill-finish. Each step requires specialized facilities, equipment, and quality controls that can’t be scaled up quickly. Novo Nordisk has publicly acknowledged that removing bottlenecks in its existing supply chain was a top priority throughout the shortage period.

One major move to address this came in 2024, when Novo Nordisk acquired three fill-finish manufacturing sites from Catalent, a large contract manufacturer. These facilities are located in Anagni, Italy; Bloomington, Indiana; and Brussels, Belgium. The acquisition gives Novo Nordisk more direct control over the final stage of production and additional capacity to fill injection pens. The company also began phasing out some of its older insulin products to free up manufacturing resources across its supply chain for newer drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic.

These expansions take time to pay off. Pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities require regulatory approval before they can begin producing drugs for patients, and ramping up output at a new site can take months or longer even after approval is secured.

Ozempic Competed for the Same Production Lines

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but are approved for different uses: Wegovy for chronic weight management and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. Both products share overlapping manufacturing infrastructure, which meant that surging demand for Ozempic compounded the pressure on Wegovy’s supply. Novo Nordisk had to balance production between a diabetes drug that patients depend on daily and a weight loss drug with its own enormous waiting list. In many cases, diabetes patients were given priority, which pushed Wegovy further into shortage.

Where Things Stand Now

In February 2025, the FDA officially determined that the semaglutide injection shortage was resolved. Semaglutide no longer appears on the FDA’s drug shortage list. This was a significant turning point, not just for patients waiting on prescriptions but also for the regulatory landscape around the drug.

During the shortage, compounding pharmacies were legally permitted to produce their own versions of semaglutide to help meet patient need. These compounded versions were not FDA-approved and varied in quality, but they filled a gap when the brand-name product was unavailable. With the shortage now officially over, the FDA has moved to wind down that compounding pathway, though the transition has involved legal disputes and policy debates that are still playing out.

Prescription trends are also shifting. By late 2024, first-time prescriptions for Wegovy had actually declined compared to earlier in the year, dropping nearly 20% between September and December 2024. Part of this reflects the arrival of competition: tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound for weight loss, overtook Wegovy in new prescription volume for the first time in late 2024. More options on the market help distribute demand across multiple products and manufacturers, which eases pressure on any single supply chain.

What to Do If You Still Can’t Find It

Even with the shortage officially resolved, individual pharmacies may occasionally run low on specific dose strengths. Wegovy requires patients to gradually step up through lower doses before reaching the maintenance dose, and certain strengths in the middle of that titration schedule have historically been harder to find than others.

If your pharmacy is temporarily out, calling other locations in your area often turns up stock. Many patients have also had success using pharmacy apps or calling Novo Nordisk’s patient support line to locate nearby availability. Your prescriber can also discuss whether an alternative GLP-1 medication might be appropriate if you’re facing repeated delays getting Wegovy filled.
