Drinking water first thing in the morning rehydrates your body after six to eight hours without any fluid intake. Your Body Is Already Dehydrated When You Wake Up

Even in a cool room with no excessive sweating, your body loses roughly 200 to 300 milliliters of water overnight just through respiration and skin evaporation. If you ate a salty dinner or had alcohol the evening before, the deficit is larger. This mild overnight dehydration is enough to affect how sharp you feel, how easily you concentrate, and how much energy you have in those first hours of the day. A glass of water bridges that gap faster than coffee or breakfast alone, since plain water absorbs quickly from your stomach into your bloodstream.

A Small Metabolic Boost

Drinking water triggers a measurable increase in your resting metabolism. A study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking 500 ml of water (about 16 ounces, or two standard cups) increased metabolic rate by 30%. The effect kicked in within 10 minutes, peaked around 30 to 40 minutes later, and lasted for more than an hour. This is called water-induced thermogenesis: your body expends energy warming the water to body temperature and processing it through your system.

That metabolic bump is modest in absolute terms. It won’t replace exercise or dietary changes for weight management. But as a free, zero-effort habit that slightly increases your calorie burn during the first hour of your day, it’s hard to argue against it.

It Can Help You Eat Less at Breakfast

Your stomach has stretch receptors, nerves that detect when the stomach wall expands and then signal your brain that you’re getting full. Drinking water before a meal activates those same receptors. Harvard Health Publishing notes that in short-term studies, older adults who drank a full glass of water before meals consistently ate less than those who didn’t. Another study found that people on a calorie-controlled diet who added extra water before meals reported less appetite and achieved more weight loss over 12 weeks compared to a similar group that skipped the water.

The long-term effects haven’t been well studied, so this isn’t a weight-loss strategy on its own. But if you tend to overeat at breakfast or reach for high-calorie convenience foods when you’re hungry, a glass of water 15 to 20 minutes before eating can take the edge off that urgency.

Getting Your Digestion Moving

Many people find that drinking water (or any fluid) in the morning helps them have a bowel movement. The mechanism behind this is the gastrocolic reflex, an automatic communication pathway between your stomach and colon. When something enters your stomach and causes it to stretch, nerves in your gut’s own nervous system (sometimes called the “brain in your gut”) detect that stretching and signal the muscles in your colon to start contracting. These contractions, called mass movements, push waste through and toward the exit.

The gastrocolic reflex is strongest in response to food, especially larger meals, because more stretching triggers a bigger signal. Water alone produces a milder version of the effect, but after a full night of fasting, even a moderate stretch in your stomach can be enough to wake up your digestive tract. If you struggle with morning constipation, drinking a full glass of water before breakfast gives your colon a gentle head start before food even enters the picture.

Cold Water vs. Warm Water

You’ll find strong opinions online about whether morning water should be ice cold, room temperature, or warm. The actual physiological differences are small. Cold water requires a few extra calories to warm up to body temperature (about five calories per ounce of ice), which contributes slightly to the thermogenic effect mentioned above. Cold water also tends to feel more satisfying to drink, and studies on athletes show people naturally drink more of it, which helps with overall hydration.

Warm water has a mild relaxing effect on the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve between your esophagus and stomach. One study found that hot beverages can decrease its resting pressure, which is worth knowing if you have acid reflux (relaxing that valve could worsen symptoms). On the other hand, if you have achalasia, a condition where that same valve has trouble opening, cold water can make swallowing more difficult.

For most people, the best temperature is whichever one you’ll actually drink. The hydration benefit is the same regardless.

How Much and When

You don’t need to chug a liter. One to two standard glasses (roughly 250 to 500 ml, or 8 to 16 ounces) is a practical starting point. The metabolic studies used 500 ml, so if you’re aiming for that thermogenic benefit, two cups is the target. Drink it before coffee if possible, since caffeine is a mild diuretic and works against rehydration when your body is already in a deficit.

Timing matters less than consistency. Whether you drink it the moment your feet hit the floor or 10 minutes later while getting ready, the benefits are the same. The key is that it happens before you get absorbed in your morning routine and forget to hydrate until lunch. Keeping a glass or bottle on your nightstand is the simplest way to make it automatic.
