A Chinese idiom, yù gài mí zhāng, loosely translates to “trying to cover things up only makes them more evident.” The pattern keeps repeating in the digital age. When a U.K. court ordered five internet providers to block The Pirate Bay in 2012, visits to the file-sharing site jumped by more than 10 million. When France’s domestic intelligence agency pressured Wikipedia to revise an article about a military base, that article became the most-viewed page on all of French Wikipedia.
Paradoxical Reactions in Medicine
The “opposite of expected” also shows up in pharmacology. Paradoxical drug reactions occur when a medication produces the reverse of its intended effect. The most well-known example involves sedatives called benzodiazepines, which are prescribed to reduce anxiety and promote calm.
