Latanoprost starts lowering eye pressure about 3 to 4 hours after you use it, but it doesn’t reach full strength until 8 to 12 hours later. If you put the drop in at 9 or 10 p.m., that window of maximum effect falls roughly between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. This matters because your eye pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day, and controlling it during those morning hours is a key goal of treatment.
The drug works by opening up a secondary drainage pathway in the eye, allowing fluid to exit more efficiently. This drainage boost happens both during the day and at night, but the timing of the dose determines when the effect is strongest.

When you apply latanoprost at bedtime, the drug is already active and building toward its peak while your eye pressure is at its natural high point overnight. By morning, when you wake up and pressure begins to shift, the medication is working at full capacity. This alignment gives you the best coverage across the full cycle of pressure changes your eyes go through each day.
Side Effects Are Less Noticeable Overnight
One of the most common side effects of latanoprost is temporary redness and mild irritation in the eye. These effects tend to show up within the first few hours after the drop is applied. By dosing at night, you sleep through that window. The redness has largely faded by the time you wake up and look in the mirror, which makes the experience of using the medication more comfortable day to day.
The Compliance Trade-Off
Interestingly, nighttime dosing is not necessarily easier to remember. A study published in the National Library of Medicine tracked adherence in patients using a similar once-daily eye drop and found that people assigned to a morning dose missed significantly fewer days of treatment (about 3.3 missed days) compared to those on an evening schedule (about 5.9 missed days). Overall adherence rates were similar, around 79 to 83 percent for both groups, but evening dosers were more likely to skip an entire day.
This suggests that while nighttime dosing is better pharmacologically, it can be harder to build into a routine. If you find yourself forgetting your evening dose, pairing it with a consistent nightly habit (brushing your teeth, setting an alarm, keeping the bottle on your nightstand) can help close that gap. If you forget your drop at bedtime and remember a few hours later, it’s generally fine to use it then. The timing shifts the peak effect slightly, but you still get meaningful pressure reduction. If you don’t remember until the next morning, most eye care providers suggest simply resuming your regular schedule that evening rather than doubling up. Taking latanoprost more than once a day can actually reduce its effectiveness, because overuse can blunt the drainage pathway the drug relies on.
Consistency matters more than perfection. Applying the drop within the same general window each night, give or take an hour, keeps your eye pressure controlled in the most predictable way. If your schedule makes evening dosing genuinely impractical, it’s worth discussing morning dosing with your eye care provider. Morning use still lowers pressure meaningfully, just with the peak shifted to the afternoon and evening instead.
