Babies refuse naps for a surprisingly short list of reasons: the timing is off, something developmental is happening, the environment isn’t working, or a physical discomfort is getting in the way. The tricky part is that babies can’t tell you which one it is, and the fix for one cause can make another worse. Most nap struggles are temporary and solvable once you identify what’s actually going on.
Wake Windows Are the Most Common Culprit
The single biggest reason babies fight naps is that the timing doesn’t match their biology. Every baby has a window of awake time they can handle before they need sleep again. Try to put them down too early, and they’re simply not tired enough. Wait too long, and they get a second wind that makes falling asleep harder, not easier.
These windows change fast in the first year. Newborns can only handle about 30 to 90 minutes of awake time before they need to sleep again. By 3 months, that stretches to 1 to 2 hours. At 4 to 5 months, most babies manage 1.5 to 2.5 hours. By 6 months it’s 2 to 3 hours, and by their first birthday, many babies can stay comfortably awake for 3 to 4 hours between naps.
If your baby is fighting every nap, start by checking whether your schedule matches these ranges. A 4-month-old being put down after just one hour of awake time may not have built up enough sleep pressure yet. A 6-month-old kept up for 4 hours may have crossed into overtired territory, where the body releases stress hormones that actually make it harder to wind down. The sweet spot is catching them when they’re tired but not wired.
Signs Your Baby Is Overtired
An overtired baby doesn’t just look sleepy. They often look the opposite: hyperactive, fussy, rubbing their eyes but arching away from you when you try to soothe them. Some babies get a glassy, unfocused stare. Others suddenly become clingy or start crying in a way that sounds different from their hungry or bored cry. The cruel irony is that the more overtired they get, the harder it becomes for them to fall asleep.
If you’re consistently seeing this pattern, the fix is counterintuitive: put your baby down earlier, not later. Even 15 to 20 minutes can make the difference between a baby who drifts off and one who screams through the entire nap attempt. Watch for the earliest sleepy cues (a yawn, turning away from stimulation, slower movements) and start your wind-down routine right then.
Developmental Leaps Disrupt Naps Temporarily
Babies who were napping perfectly can suddenly refuse to sleep when they’re working on a new physical skill. Rolling, crawling, pulling to stand, and walking all cause temporary nap disruptions, and crawling (typically around 6 to 10 months) is one of the worst offenders.
The reason is neurological. When a baby is learning to crawl, the parts of the brain responsible for motor control are building new connections around the clock. That increased brain activity doesn’t shut off at nap time. Babies will literally practice their new skill in the crib instead of sleeping, popping up onto all fours at 2 in the afternoon with no interest in lying back down. They’re also physically exhausted from the effort of learning, which creates a frustrating combination of being too tired and too stimulated at the same time.
Separation anxiety tends to peak during these same developmental windows, which compounds the problem. A baby who was fine being placed in their crib may suddenly protest the moment you step away. This phase typically lasts 1 to 3 weeks. The most helpful thing you can do is give your baby plenty of floor time to practice their new skill during wake windows, so the novelty wears off faster and they’re less compelled to rehearse during naps.
Your Baby May Be Dropping a Nap
Sometimes nap refusal isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a signal that your baby’s sleep needs are shifting. Babies typically move from three naps to two somewhere around 6 to 8 months, and from two naps to one around 12 to 18 months. During these transitions, the old schedule stops working before the new one is fully established, creating a messy in-between period where naps feel impossible.
Signs that a nap transition is happening include:
- Resisting one specific nap (usually the last nap of the day) while still taking others fine
- Skipping naps entirely without seeming overtired afterward
- Taking much shorter naps than usual across the board
- Waking earlier in the morning or having long wakeful periods in the middle of the night
If you’re seeing these signs consistently for two weeks or more, it’s likely time to restructure the schedule rather than keep trying to force the old one. During the transition, you can alternate between two-nap and three-nap days depending on how your baby seems, gradually settling into the new pattern.
The Sleep Environment Matters More Than You Think
Daytime sleep is lighter and more fragile than nighttime sleep, partly because babies don’t produce melatonin in a reliable rhythm until around 9 to 12 weeks of age. Even after that point, daytime light exposure can interfere with the hormonal signals that help a baby feel drowsy.
A room that’s “dark enough” for nighttime sleep may not be dark enough for naps. Blackout curtains or shades that block light at the edges make a real difference for many babies. The ideal room temperature for infant sleep is 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C). Babies who are too warm often wake after one sleep cycle (about 30 to 45 minutes) and can’t resettle.
White noise helps mask household sounds that would otherwise wake a baby during lighter sleep phases. Babies cycle through sleep stages more frequently than adults, and each transition between cycles is a vulnerable moment where a door closing or a dog barking can pull them fully awake. Consistent background noise smooths over those transitions.
Physical Discomfort Can Be Hidden
If your baby naps well when held upright but screams when placed flat in the crib, reflux may be the issue. Silent reflux is particularly sneaky because the baby doesn’t spit up visibly. Instead, stomach contents rise into the esophagus and then slide back down, causing discomfort without the obvious mess. Babies with silent reflux may sound hoarse, cough during or after feeds, or cry when moved from an upright position to lying on their back. The valve between the stomach and esophagus is more likely to open when a baby is very full or changes position suddenly, which is exactly what happens at nap time.
Teething is another common cause of nap refusal, though it’s often blamed for sleep problems that have nothing to do with it. True teething pain tends to be worst in the days right before a tooth breaks through the gum, not for weeks on end. If your baby is drooling heavily, chewing on everything, and has swollen gums with a visible white bump, teething pain could be disrupting naps. If those signs aren’t present, it’s worth looking at other explanations first.
Hunger is the simplest cause and the easiest to overlook. Babies going through growth spurts need more calories, and a baby who ate a normal amount may still be too hungry to settle. If your baby is under 6 months and fighting naps, try offering a feed before the nap attempt, even if it hasn’t been “long enough” since the last one by the clock.
When Short Naps Are the Problem
Some babies fall asleep just fine but wake up after 20 to 30 minutes, which barely counts as rest. This usually means they’re completing one sleep cycle and then waking fully at the transition point instead of rolling into the next cycle. Before about 5 months of age, this is largely developmental and difficult to change. Babies’ sleep cycles are simply shorter than adults’, and the ability to connect one cycle to the next is a skill that matures over time.
After 5 to 6 months, short naps often respond to environmental fixes (darker room, white noise, consistent sleep location) and schedule adjustments. If the wake window before the nap is too short, the baby may not have enough sleep pressure to push through that between-cycle wake-up. Slightly extending the awake time before the nap, even by 15 minutes, can help build enough drive to sustain a longer stretch of sleep.
For babies who wake at the 30-minute mark, waiting 5 to 10 minutes before going in can sometimes allow them to resettle on their own. Many babies fuss, shift around, or even cry briefly at the sleep-cycle transition without being fully awake. Rushing in too quickly can accidentally pull them out of a moment they might have passed through independently.
