Why Would a Dog Suddenly Start Having Seizures?

Dogs can start having seizures suddenly for a wide range of reasons, from genetic epilepsy to toxic exposures to underlying organ disease. The cause often depends on your dog’s age. In dogs between 6 months and 6 years old, the most common explanation is idiopathic epilepsy, a genetic condition with a median onset around 2.5 years of age. In very young puppies or older dogs, the list of likely causes shifts toward infections, metabolic problems, or brain tumors.

Idiopathic Epilepsy: The Most Common Cause

Idiopathic epilepsy is the single most frequent reason otherwise healthy dogs begin seizing. “Idiopathic” means there’s no identifiable structural or metabolic cause. The brain’s electrical activity simply misfires, and genetics play a major role. Certain breeds carry a higher risk, including Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Beagles, Border Collies, and Australian Shepherds.

The hallmark of idiopathic epilepsy is timing: seizures typically appear between 6 months and 6 years of age. If your dog falls within that window and is otherwise healthy between episodes, epilepsy is the leading suspect. The diagnosis is essentially one of exclusion. Your vet will run blood work and possibly imaging to rule out other causes, and if everything comes back normal, idiopathic epilepsy is the working diagnosis.

Toxins That Trigger Seizures Quickly

If a previously healthy dog has a seizure out of nowhere, poisoning is one of the first things to consider, especially if you notice chewed packaging, missing food, or access to the garage or garden. Many common household items are neurotoxic to dogs and can cause seizures within hours of ingestion.

  • Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum, candy, and peanut butter) causes a dangerous drop in blood sugar that leads to weakness, tremors, and seizures.
  • Chocolate and caffeine stimulate the nervous system and heart. Dark chocolate is especially dangerous.
  • Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is sweet-tasting and attractive to dogs. Even small amounts cause vomiting, lethargy, and seizures.
  • Moth balls directly stimulate the central nervous system, triggering excitement and seizures.
  • Wild mushrooms can cause a cascade of neurological signs from tremors to seizures to coma, depending on the species.
  • Moldy food (mycotoxins) from compost bins or trash causes severe muscle tremors, hyperactivity, and seizures.
  • Salt or homemade play dough in large quantities raises blood sodium to dangerous levels, causing tremors and seizures.
  • Tobacco products contain nicotine, which can trigger seizures.

If you suspect your dog ate something toxic, don’t wait for a seizure to happen. Call your vet or an animal poison control hotline immediately. Speed matters with most poisonings.

Metabolic and Organ-Related Causes

Sometimes the brain itself is fine, but a problem elsewhere in the body creates conditions that make the brain misfire. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is a classic example. It’s particularly common in toy breed puppies, diabetic dogs on insulin, and dogs with insulin-secreting tumors. When blood sugar drops far enough, the brain loses its fuel supply and a seizure can follow.

Liver disease is another frequent culprit. The liver filters toxins from the bloodstream, and when it can’t do its job, whether from a congenital liver shunt in a young dog or progressive liver failure in an older one, toxins build up and affect the brain. Kidney failure works through a similar mechanism. Advanced kidney disease allows waste products to accumulate, eventually reaching levels that trigger neurological symptoms including seizures.

Nursing mothers can develop dangerously low calcium levels (a condition sometimes called milk fever), which causes muscle spasms, a rapid heartbeat, fever, and seizures. This tends to hit in the first few weeks after giving birth, especially in small breeds with large litters.

Age-Related Patterns Worth Knowing

Your dog’s age is one of the most useful clues for narrowing down the cause. Puppies under 6 months that start seizing are more likely dealing with a birth defect like a liver shunt, an infection, a developmental brain abnormality, or a toxic exposure. Idiopathic epilepsy is uncommon at this age.

Dogs in the 6-month to 6-year window most often have idiopathic epilepsy, though toxins and metabolic disease remain possibilities. For dogs older than 6 or 7 that start seizing for the first time, the concern shifts toward brain tumors, organ failure, or other structural brain disease. A first seizure in a senior dog warrants a thorough workup, often including advanced imaging like an MRI.

What a Seizure Looks Like

A full (generalized) seizure usually involves your dog falling to one side, becoming stiff, then paddling their legs rhythmically. They may drool, urinate, or defecate. Their eyes may be open but unfocused. The whole episode typically lasts 30 seconds to 2 minutes, though it will feel much longer when you’re watching it happen. Your dog is unconscious during this and not in pain, even though it looks distressing.

Not all seizures are this dramatic. Some dogs have focal seizures that affect just one part of the body: a twitching face, snapping at invisible flies, or a single limb jerking. These can progress into full seizures or stay localized.

After the seizure ends, most dogs enter a recovery phase that can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. During this time your dog may seem confused, disoriented, temporarily blind, or unusually hungry and thirsty. Some dogs pace restlessly. This is all normal post-seizure behavior and resolves on its own.

What to Do During a Seizure

Your instinct will be to comfort your dog, but the most helpful thing you can do is stay calm and keep them safe. Move any objects near them that could fall or break. If they’re near stairs, position yourself below them to block a fall. Do not put your hands near their mouth. Dogs are not aware of their surroundings during a seizure and cannot control their jaw, so bites happen easily and unintentionally.

Time the seizure from start to finish. This information is extremely valuable for your vet. If possible, take a short video on your phone. It helps a vet distinguish between a true seizure and other events that can look similar, like fainting or vestibular episodes.

A seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, or multiple seizures in a row without your dog fully recovering in between, is an emergency. This situation, called status epilepticus, can cause brain damage or death and requires immediate veterinary intervention.

How Vets Identify the Cause

After a first seizure, your vet will typically start with a thorough physical exam and blood work, including a complete blood count, organ function panels, and blood sugar. These tests catch metabolic problems like liver or kidney disease. If the blood work is normal in a young to middle-aged dog, idiopathic epilepsy becomes the leading diagnosis.

For dogs where blood work doesn’t explain the seizures, or when the pattern is unusual, vets may recommend more advanced testing. An MRI can reveal brain tumors, inflammation, or structural abnormalities. A spinal fluid analysis can detect infections or inflammation in the brain. Bile acid testing is sometimes used to check for liver shunts that blood work alone might miss.

Treatment and What to Expect Long-Term

Not every dog that has a single seizure needs medication. Many vets will discuss starting treatment if your dog has more than one seizure every 6 to 8 weeks, has cluster seizures (multiple in 24 hours), or has had status epilepticus.

The most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant reduces seizure frequency in about 85% of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy when blood levels are kept in the right range. A second common option works through a different mechanism and shows improvement in up to 83% of dogs. Both require periodic blood tests to monitor levels and check for side effects on the liver and other organs. The most noticeable side effects you’ll see at home are increased thirst, increased appetite, some drowsiness, and occasional wobbliness in the back legs. These often improve as your dog adjusts over the first few weeks.

For dogs whose seizures don’t respond well to initial treatment, several add-on medications are available. In studies, about 58% of dogs with hard-to-control epilepsy saw significant improvement with one of these second-line options. The goal of treatment is rarely to eliminate seizures completely. Instead, it’s to reduce their frequency and severity to a level that lets your dog live a comfortable, happy life. Most dogs with well-managed epilepsy have a normal or near-normal lifespan.

If the seizures are caused by something identifiable, like a toxin exposure, low blood sugar, or liver disease, treating the underlying problem often resolves the seizures entirely. This is why getting a proper diagnosis matters so much. The treatment path for a dog with epilepsy looks very different from one with a liver shunt or a brain tumor.
