Why You Feel Dizzy When You Stand Up & How to Stop It

Dizziness when you stand up is usually caused by a temporary drop in blood pressure that briefly reduces blood flow to your brain. When you go from sitting or lying down to standing, gravity pulls blood into your legs and abdomen. Your body normally compensates within a second or two, but when that compensation is too slow or too weak, you feel lightheaded, unsteady, or like the room is dimming. This is extremely common and often harmless, but in some cases it signals something worth paying attention to.

What Happens Inside Your Body

Your cardiovascular system has a built-in correction mechanism. Pressure sensors called baroreceptors sit in your major blood vessels, particularly in the neck and near the heart. When you stand and blood pressure starts to dip, these sensors detect the change within a heartbeat and send signals to your brain. Your brain responds by tightening blood vessels and slightly increasing your heart rate, pushing blood back up toward your head.

When this system works well, you never notice it. When it’s sluggish, even for a moment, your brain gets less blood than it needs and you feel dizzy. The sensation typically lasts a few seconds to a minute. If the drop is steep enough, your vision may gray out or you might feel like you’re about to faint.

The clinical term for this is orthostatic hypotension. It’s defined as a drop of at least 20 points in systolic blood pressure (the top number) or 10 points in diastolic pressure (the bottom number) within two to five minutes of standing. You don’t need to know your exact numbers to understand the pattern, but those thresholds are what a doctor would check if you reported frequent episodes.

The Most Common Causes

Dehydration is the single most frequent trigger. When you haven’t had enough water, your total blood volume drops, which means there’s less blood available to circulate when gravity redistributes it. This is why dizziness on standing is more common on hot days, after exercise, after alcohol, or first thing in the morning when you’ve gone hours without fluids.

Prolonged sitting or lying down also makes it worse. If you’ve been in bed for a while or spent hours at a desk, your body’s reflexes are in a relaxed baseline mode. Standing suddenly asks for an abrupt adjustment that your system may not deliver fast enough.

Skipping meals, standing up too quickly, and being overtired all contribute. So does anything that lowers blood volume: a stomach bug with vomiting or diarrhea, heavy menstrual periods, or simply not drinking enough throughout the day.

Medications That Can Cause It

Several categories of medication make dizziness on standing more likely, and some of them aren’t obvious. Blood pressure medications are the usual suspects, including diuretics (water pills), beta blockers, and vasodilators. These all reduce either blood volume or the ability of your blood vessels to tighten on demand.

But plenty of non-blood-pressure drugs do the same thing. Certain antidepressants, particularly older tricyclics and trazodone, can block the signals that tighten blood vessels. Tamsulosin, commonly prescribed for prostate issues, relaxes smooth muscle in a way that extends beyond the prostate and can lower standing blood pressure. Medications for Parkinson’s disease, the muscle relaxant tizanidine, and drugs for erectile dysfunction can all contribute.

If your dizziness started or worsened around the same time you began a new medication, that’s a connection worth raising with your prescriber. In many cases a dose adjustment or timing change can help.

When It Might Be Something More

Occasional lightheadedness when you stand isn’t alarming. Frequent episodes, especially if they’re getting worse or causing you to nearly pass out, deserve a closer look.

One condition that’s often underdiagnosed is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. In POTS, the main problem isn’t a blood pressure drop but an excessive heart rate increase. Adults with POTS experience a jump of at least 30 beats per minute (40 in adolescents) within the first 10 minutes of standing. You might feel dizzy, but also notice your heart racing, brain fog, or fatigue that worsens the longer you’re upright. POTS is most common in younger women and often develops after a viral illness, surgery, or pregnancy.

Certain patterns suggest a more serious underlying cause and warrant prompt medical evaluation:

  • Dizziness or fainting during physical exertion, which can indicate a structural heart problem or exercise-triggered arrhythmia
  • Chest pain or palpitations alongside the dizziness
  • Multiple fainting episodes in a short period
  • Significant injury from a fall caused by passing out
  • A family history of sudden unexplained death or fainting in younger relatives

Older adults are at higher risk for dangerous causes, partly because the baroreceptor reflex naturally slows with age and partly because they’re more likely to be on multiple medications that compound the effect.

Simple Ways to Reduce Dizziness

The most effective strategy is also the simplest: drink more fluids and increase your salt intake. Salt helps your body retain water, which increases blood volume. For people with recurrent symptoms, Johns Hopkins Medicine recommends 60 to 100 ounces of fluid per day and 3 to 5 grams of salt daily. That’s more salt than typical dietary guidelines suggest for the general population, so this approach is specifically for people whose blood pressure runs low on standing, not for those with high blood pressure.

How you stand matters too. Instead of jumping straight up, sit at the edge of the bed or chair for 10 to 15 seconds first. Pump your ankles up and down a few times before rising. This activates the calf muscles, which act as pumps to push blood back toward your heart.

Counter-Pressure Techniques

If you feel dizziness coming on after standing, several physical maneuvers can raise your blood pressure enough to prevent fainting. These work by squeezing large muscle groups, which forces blood out of your limbs and back into central circulation.

  • Leg crossing: Cross one leg over the other and squeeze your leg, abdominal, and buttock muscles. Hold until the dizziness passes.
  • Arm tensing: Grip one hand with the other and pull them apart without letting go, creating sustained tension in both arms.
  • Hand grip: Squeeze a rubber ball or similar object in your dominant hand as hard as you can until symptoms fade.

The Cleveland Clinic recommends practicing these when you’re feeling fine so they become automatic when you actually need them. In the moment, dizziness can make it hard to think clearly, and having a rehearsed physical response helps.

Other Habits That Help

Eating smaller, more frequent meals can reduce post-meal blood pressure dips, which tend to overlap with standing-related drops. Large meals divert blood to the digestive system, leaving less available for the brain. Avoiding alcohol also helps, since it dilates blood vessels and promotes fluid loss.

Compression stockings, the kind that go up to the waist or at least to the thigh, help prevent blood from pooling in the legs. Knee-high stockings are less effective because much of the pooling happens in the thighs and abdomen. Sleeping with the head of your bed elevated a few inches (rather than flat) can also train your body to better handle gravitational shifts.

Regular exercise, particularly lower-body work like walking, cycling, or squats, strengthens the muscle pump in your legs and improves your body’s ability to regulate blood pressure during position changes. Start gently if you’ve been sedentary, since the initial adjustment period can temporarily make symptoms worse before they improve.
