Why Your CPAP Mask Is Leaking Water and How to Fix It

Water dripping from your CPAP mask is almost always caused by condensation forming inside the tubing, a problem CPAP users commonly call “rainout.” It happens when warm, humidified air from your machine cools as it travels through the hose, causing moisture to condense into water droplets that collect and eventually reach your mask. The good news: it’s easy to fix once you understand what’s creating the temperature mismatch.

How Rainout Forms Inside Your Tubing

Your CPAP’s humidifier heats water to add moisture to the air you breathe, which prevents the dryness, nasal irritation, and sore throat that dry pressurized air can cause. That warm, moist air then travels through several feet of tubing before reaching your face. If the tubing is cooler than the air inside it, the moisture condenses on the inner walls of the hose, exactly the way water beads on the outside of a cold glass on a humid day.

Those droplets accumulate over the course of the night, pooling in low points of the hose. Eventually the water reaches your mask, where it can splash your face, gurgle with each breath, or leak out around the seal. Sleeping in a cold bedroom makes this worse because the temperature gap between the warm humidified air and the cool hose walls grows larger. Running your humidifier on a high setting also increases the amount of available moisture, giving condensation more to work with.

The Most Common Triggers

A few specific conditions make rainout much more likely:

  • Cold room temperature. If your bedroom is below about 65°F, or if you sleep near an air conditioning vent or open window, the tubing chills quickly and condensation accelerates.
  • High humidity settings. The higher you set your humidifier, the more moisture is in the air traveling through the hose. If your setting is above 4 or 5 (on most machines that go up to 6 or 8), you’re increasing the chance of water buildup.
  • Standard (unheated) tubing. A regular CPAP hose has no way to stay warm. It simply takes on the temperature of the room around it.
  • Hose routing. If your tubing loops below the level of your mask, water pools at the low point and eventually rushes toward your face. Tubing that runs off the side of the bed and touches a cold floor is especially prone to this.

Lower Your Humidity Setting First

The simplest fix is to reduce the humidity level on your machine by one or two notches. On ResMed’s AirSense 10, for example, the humidity scale runs from 1 to 8 with a default of 4. On older S9 models, it runs from 1 to 6 with a default of 3. If you’re set above the default, try bringing it back down. You want just enough moisture to keep your nose and throat comfortable without overloading the tubing with water vapor.

This is a balancing act. Dropping the humidity too low can leave you waking up with a dry mouth or irritated nasal passages. Start by reducing one level at a time and sleeping on it for a couple of nights before adjusting further.

Heated Tubing Makes the Biggest Difference

A heated hose contains a thin wire that runs the length of the tubing and keeps it warm, maintaining a consistent temperature as air flows from the humidifier to your mask. This eliminates the temperature drop that causes condensation in the first place. If you’re using a standard hose and dealing with persistent rainout, switching to a heated one is the single most effective upgrade you can make.

ResMed’s ClimateLineAir tubing, for instance, works with the machine’s sensors to adjust the hose temperature in real time based on both the humidity level and the ambient room temperature. Most major CPAP brands offer a similar heated tubing option. If your machine supports one, it’s worth the investment. You can also increase the tube temperature by just 1 to 2 degrees if you’re already using a heated hose but still seeing some moisture.

Auto Climate Control on Newer Machines

If you have a newer CPAP like the ResMed AirSense 11, there’s an auto climate control feature that handles this problem for you. It uses sensors in the machine and tubing to monitor room temperature and humidity levels in real time, then automatically adjusts both the humidifier output and the hose temperature to prevent condensation before it starts. Turning this feature on (usually from the settings menu on the machine’s screen) means you don’t have to manually fine-tune humidity and tube temperature yourself.

For most people, enabling auto climate control eliminates rainout entirely. If your machine has this option and you’ve been running things in manual mode, switching to auto is the fastest path to a dry mask.

Other Fixes That Help

If you don’t have access to a heated hose or want additional protection, a few practical changes can reduce or stop the water buildup.

Use a hose cover. A fabric sleeve that wraps around your tubing acts as insulation, keeping the internal air temperature more stable regardless of how cool your room gets. These are inexpensive and available from most CPAP suppliers. They won’t work as well as a heated hose, but they make a noticeable difference, especially in moderately cool bedrooms.

Route the hose above your head. If your tubing runs downhill from the machine to your mask, any condensation that forms will flow straight to your face. Try positioning the machine on a nightstand at or above pillow level, and keep the hose from dipping below the mask connection point. Some people use a hose holder or clip that attaches to the headboard to keep the tubing elevated.

Keep your bedroom a bit warmer. This isn’t always practical or desirable, but even raising the room temperature by a few degrees narrows the gap between the humidified air and the tubing walls. If you prefer sleeping in a cold room, this is where heated tubing or a hose cover becomes especially important.

Tuck the hose under the covers. Running the tubing under your blanket uses your body heat to keep it warm. It’s a simple trick that works surprisingly well, though it can feel awkward until you find a comfortable way to route it.

Rainout vs. Mask Seal Leaks

It’s worth confirming that the water on your face is actually coming from inside the mask rather than from a poor seal. If your mask cushion doesn’t fit snugly, humid air can escape around the edges and condense on your skin, which can feel like water leaking. The difference: rainout tends to produce actual dripping or pooling water (sometimes you’ll hear gurgling), while a seal leak feels more like a stream of air blowing on your cheeks or eyes, sometimes with slight dampness.

If the water issue comes and goes with the seasons, getting worse in winter when your bedroom is colder, that’s a strong sign it’s condensation rather than a fit problem. If it happens year-round and you also hear a hissing sound from the mask, the cushion may need replacing or resizing.
