A pale crested gecko is usually in its “fired down” state, a completely normal color shift that happens when the gecko is resting, sleeping, or simply relaxed. Crested geckos routinely cycle between a brighter, more saturated look (“fired up”) and a washed-out, lighter version of themselves (“fired down”), sometimes looking like two entirely different animals. If your gecko looks pale but is eating, active at night, and otherwise healthy, there’s a good chance nothing is wrong at all. But persistent paleness, especially combined with other symptoms, can point to dehydration, poor humidity, temperature problems, or stress.
Fired Up vs. Fired Down Color Changes
Crested geckos have specialized pigment cells in their skin called chromatophores that expand and contract depending on the gecko’s mood, activity level, and environment. When these cells contract, the gecko looks lighter and duller. When they expand, colors become richer and patterns pop. This is the fired up/fired down cycle, and it’s one of the most dramatic natural color shifts in pet reptiles.
A fired down gecko typically looks pale, muted, and almost washed out. You’ll usually see this during the day when your gecko is sleeping or sitting still. At night, when the gecko wakes up and becomes active, it often fires up and shows its true coloration. Some geckos fire up when they’re excited, exploring, or even mildly stressed. If you only check on your gecko during the daytime, you may never see its full color range. Try observing it an hour or two after the lights go off to see if the color returns.
Shedding Can Make Them Look Ghostly
Right before a shed, crested geckos develop a thin layer of old skin that separates from the new skin underneath. This gives them a distinctly pale, almost ghostly or whitish appearance that looks different from normal fired-down coloring. The entire body may look uniformly faded, and the skin can appear slightly hazy or dry.
Juvenile crested geckos shed every one to two weeks, while adults shed roughly once a month. Most geckos shed overnight and eat the old skin, so you may never witness the process directly. You’ll just notice your gecko looking unusually pale one evening and then looking fresh and vibrant the next morning. This is entirely normal and nothing to worry about unless the shed doesn’t complete properly.
When Shed Gets Stuck
Retained shed is a real concern. Old skin that stays attached, particularly around the toes, tail tip, or limbs, can dry and tighten like a tourniquet. This constricts blood flow and causes swelling at the tips of the affected digits or tail. Over time, it can cut off circulation entirely and lead to tissue loss. If you notice papery, flaky patches of skin clinging to your gecko’s feet or tail after a shed cycle, gently misting the enclosure and providing a humid hide can help loosen it. Persistent retained shed may need hands-on removal with the help of a reptile vet.
Low Humidity and Dehydration
Crested geckos are native to the humid forests of New Caledonia, and their skin reflects that. When humidity drops too low for too long, the skin dries out, loses elasticity, and takes on a dull, pale look. Dehydrated skin can’t reflect light the way healthy, hydrated skin does, so the gecko appears washed out even when it should be fired up.
Signs of dehydration beyond paleness include wrinkled or saggy skin, sticky saliva, sunken eyes, and lethargy. If you gently pinch the skin on your gecko’s side and it stays tented instead of snapping back, dehydration is likely.
The ideal humidity range sits between 60% and 80%. Misting the enclosure once or twice daily, typically in the evening and optionally in the morning, keeps levels in that range. Between mistings, let the enclosure dry out to around 40% to 50%. Constant dampness encourages mold growth, which creates its own health problems. A digital hygrometer placed at gecko level gives you the most accurate reading.
Temperature Problems
Cold temperatures are one of the most overlooked causes of persistent paleness. When the enclosure is too cool, a crested gecko’s metabolism slows down, and so does blood flow to the skin. Pigment doesn’t distribute as effectively, leaving the gecko looking consistently pale rather than cycling between fired up and fired down like it normally would. A gecko kept in a chronically cold enclosure may stay light-colored even at night during its active hours.
Low temperatures also interfere with shedding. Incomplete sheds leave behind patches of dull, opaque old skin that make the gecko appear even paler and patchier. Room temperature between roughly 72°F and 78°F during the day with a slight nighttime drop works well for most crested geckos. If your home dips below 70°F regularly, a low-wattage heat source may be necessary.
Stress-Related Paleness
Stress triggers the release of hormones like corticosterone, which cause the pigment cells in a gecko’s skin to contract. The result is a paler, more muted appearance that can persist as long as the stressor does. A gecko that’s stressed from a new enclosure, frequent handling, loud surroundings, or being housed with another gecko may stay fired down nearly all the time.
Common stress triggers include:
- Excessive handling: Crested geckos tolerate handling but don’t seek it out. Frequent or rough handling can keep stress hormones elevated.
- Inadequate hiding spots: Without enough cover, geckos feel exposed. Stressed geckos hide more, get less light exposure, and look paler as a result.
- Cohabitation: Housing two crested geckos together, especially two males, creates chronic territorial stress even if you never see outright fighting.
- Enclosure placement: A tank in a high-traffic area, near a TV, or in direct sunlight can keep a gecko on edge.
If your gecko has been pale since you brought it home or since you changed something in its setup, give it one to two weeks of minimal disturbance with plenty of foliage and hiding spots. Many geckos settle in and start showing their full color range once they feel secure.
Nutritional Deficiencies
While calcium deficiency and metabolic bone disease don’t directly bleach a gecko’s skin color, they do affect overall health in ways that make a gecko look “off.” A gecko with poor nutrition may become lethargic, spend more time hiding, and stop cycling through its normal color changes. Muscle twitching, a soft or rubbery jaw, and difficulty gripping branches are more specific warning signs of calcium deficiency. A complete crested gecko diet powder mixed with water provides balanced nutrition, and dusting live feeder insects with a calcium supplement fills any remaining gaps.
How to Tell Normal From Concerning
The quickest way to gauge whether your gecko’s paleness is routine or a red flag is to look at the full picture. A gecko that’s pale during the day, fires up at night, eats normally, sheds cleanly, and moves confidently is almost certainly just fired down. That’s baseline behavior for the species.
Paleness becomes worth investigating when it comes with other changes: refusing food, staying pale even at night during active hours, visible retained shed, wrinkled skin, weight loss, or lethargy. Check your humidity and temperature readings first, since those two factors account for most non-behavioral causes of persistent paleness. If the environment checks out and the gecko still looks chronically washed out, a reptile veterinarian can assess for underlying health issues like parasites or infection that might not be obvious from the outside.
