Why Your Farts Smell So Bad and When to Worry

The smell of your gas comes almost entirely from sulfur compounds, particularly hydrogen sulfide, the same chemical responsible for the rotten-egg odor. These compounds make up less than 1% of the total volume of a fart, but they’re potent enough to be detectable at extremely low concentrations. The rest of your gas is mostly odorless nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane. So when your farts smell especially terrible, it means your gut is producing more of those sulfur-rich byproducts than usual.

How Gut Bacteria Create the Smell

Your digestive tract is home to trillions of bacteria, and some of them specialize in breaking down sulfur-containing compounds from food. A group called sulfate-reducing bacteria, with the species Desulfovibrio piger being the most common in the human gut, convert dietary sulfur into hydrogen sulfide gas as part of their normal metabolism. This is a byproduct of their version of “breathing,” using sulfate instead of oxygen.

Other fermentation byproducts add to the stench. When bacteria in your colon break down proteins, they produce not just hydrogen sulfide but also indole and skatole, two compounds that smell distinctly fecal. The combination of all three is what gives particularly bad gas its layered, hard-to-ignore quality. The more undigested material that reaches your colon, the more raw material these bacteria have to work with, and the worse things smell.

High-Sulfur and High-Protein Foods

Diet is the single biggest factor in how your gas smells on any given day. Foods rich in sulfur give gut bacteria exactly what they need to ramp up hydrogen sulfide production. The main offenders include cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts), alliums (garlic, onions), eggs, red meat, and dried fruits preserved with sulfites like wine or dried apricots. Beans and legumes are famous for causing gas in general, but they tend to increase volume more than smell. It’s the sulfur-heavy foods that make things truly foul.

High-protein diets deserve special attention. When you eat more protein than your small intestine can fully absorb, the excess reaches the colon, where bacteria ferment it into a cocktail of odorous compounds: ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, phenol, indole, and skatole. The amino acids cysteine and methionine are particularly sulfur-rich, and they’re abundant in animal proteins like beef, pork, and eggs. If you’ve recently increased your protein intake through diet or supplements like whey protein shakes, that’s a very likely explanation for the change in smell.

Food Intolerances and Malabsorption

When your small intestine can’t properly absorb a sugar or nutrient, it passes undigested into the colon, where bacteria feast on it. Lactose intolerance is the most common example. If you lack enough of the enzyme that breaks down dairy sugar, that sugar reaches the colon intact, and bacterial fermentation produces excess gas along with bloating and cramping.

Fructose malabsorption works similarly. When the small intestine can’t fully absorb fructose, the unabsorbed sugar draws water into the colon through osmotic effects and gets rapidly fermented by bacteria into carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and short-chain fatty acids. This causes bloating, abdominal discomfort, and increased motility, often with noticeably smellier gas. Fructose is found in high concentrations in fruit juices, honey, agave, and many processed foods sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Gluten sensitivity and general carbohydrate malabsorption can produce the same pattern.

A useful clue: if your smelly gas consistently arrives alongside bloating, cramping, or loose stools after eating specific foods, an intolerance is worth investigating. Keeping a food diary for two to three weeks can help you identify the pattern.

Bacterial Overgrowth in the Small Intestine

Normally, your small intestine has relatively few bacteria compared to the colon. In small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), bacteria colonize the small intestine in unusually high numbers and start fermenting food earlier in the digestive process than they should. This produces more gas overall and can make it smell worse, because bacteria are now breaking down carbohydrates and fats before they’ve been properly absorbed.

SIBO often causes persistent bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sometimes oily or especially foul-smelling stools due to fat malabsorption. It’s more common in people with slow gut motility, those who’ve had abdominal surgery, or people with conditions like diabetes or Crohn’s disease that affect digestion. If your gas has been persistently terrible for weeks alongside these other symptoms, SIBO is one of the conditions a doctor would consider.

Medications That Change Your Gas

Several common medications can make gas smellier as a side effect. Anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen can irritate the gut lining and alter bacterial activity. Some laxatives, antifungal medications, and statins (used for cholesterol) are also associated with excessive or smelly gas. Antibiotics are a particularly common culprit because they disrupt the normal balance of gut bacteria, sometimes allowing sulfate-reducing species to temporarily flourish.

Iron supplements are another well-known offender. They’re poorly absorbed in the small intestine, and the unabsorbed iron that reaches the colon interacts with bacteria to produce dark, sulfurous-smelling gas and stool. If your gas changed noticeably after starting a new medication or supplement, that connection is worth noting.

Constipation and Slow Transit

When stool moves slowly through your colon, bacteria have more time to ferment it. The longer food waste sits, the more sulfur compounds accumulate, and the worse your gas smells when it finally comes out. Constipation is one of the most overlooked reasons for a sudden change in gas odor. Dehydration, low fiber intake, inactivity, and stress can all slow things down. If you haven’t had a bowel movement in a day or two longer than your usual pattern, that alone could explain the change.

When Smelly Gas Signals Something More

Foul-smelling gas by itself is almost always harmless. It becomes worth investigating when it’s persistent (lasting weeks rather than days) and accompanied by other symptoms. Red flags include unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool, persistent diarrhea or constipation that’s new for you, vomiting, or heartburn that won’t resolve. These combinations can point to conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, pancreatic insufficiency, or infections that need treatment.

For most people, though, the explanation is straightforward: something you ate, a shift in your gut bacteria from stress or medication, or a food intolerance you haven’t identified yet. Reducing sulfur-heavy foods for a few days is the simplest first test. If the smell improves, you’ve likely found your answer.
