Legs bruise more easily than other body parts because gravity forces more blood pressure into the veins of your lower body, making those blood vessels more vulnerable to leaking after even minor bumps. But if you’re noticing bruises appearing frequently, growing larger than usual, or showing up without any injury you can remember, several other factors could be at play, from medications and nutrition to underlying health conditions.
Why Legs Are Especially Prone to Bruising
Your legs work against gravity all day. Blood has to travel a long way back up to your heart, and the veins in your lower legs bear the most hydrostatic pressure of any veins in your body. Over time, or under certain conditions, the tiny valves inside those veins can weaken. When that happens, blood flow slows, pools, and stretches the vein walls. Swollen or bulging veins sit closer to the skin’s surface, which makes them more prone to injury. Even minor contact, or sometimes no obvious injury at all, can cause a visible bruise.
This is the same mechanism behind varicose veins. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, chronic venous disease is especially common in the lower legs precisely because of this gravity and pressure dynamic. If you notice bruises clustering around visible or bulging veins, weakened vein walls are a likely explanation.
Medications and Supplements That Thin Your Blood
One of the most common reasons for easy bruising is something you’re already taking. Several widely used medications reduce your blood’s ability to clot, which means even a light knock can produce a noticeable bruise. The usual culprits include:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers: aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen all interfere with clotting.
- Prescription blood thinners: warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, and similar anticoagulants prescribed for heart conditions or blood clot prevention.
- Anti-platelet drugs: often prescribed after heart attacks or stent placement.
- Corticosteroids: these thin the skin itself over time, making blood vessels underneath easier to damage.
- Certain antibiotics and antidepressants: some can also affect clotting.
Supplements are easy to overlook. Ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginger, fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids), ginseng, turmeric, evening primrose oil, grapeseed extract, and even high-dose vitamins C and E all have documented blood-thinning effects. If you’re taking a combination of these alongside a pain reliever or prescription blood thinner, the effect compounds. How Aging Changes Your Skin and Blood Vessels
If you’re over 50 and noticing more bruises on your forearms and legs, the explanation may be straightforward. As you age, the connective tissue in your skin gradually breaks down. Years of sun exposure accelerate this process. The protective layer of fat and collagen beneath your skin thins out, leaving blood vessels with less cushioning. Those vessels also become more fragile on their own.
Doctors call this “senile purpura,” though it has nothing to do with cognitive decline. It simply means age-related bruising from increased vessel fragility in thinned skin. The bruises tend to be flat, irregularly shaped, and can appear from very minor contact. They’re cosmetically frustrating but usually not dangerous on their own. That said, if bruising is new, worsening, or accompanied by other symptoms, it’s worth investigating further rather than assuming it’s just aging.
Nutritional Gaps That Weaken Blood Vessels
Your body needs specific nutrients to keep blood vessels strong and to form clots properly. Vitamin C plays a direct role in maintaining the structural integrity of blood vessel walls. Without enough of it, capillaries become fragile and leak more easily. While severe vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) is rare in developed countries, mild deficiency is more common than you might think, particularly in people with limited diets, smokers, and older adults.
Vitamin K is essential for your body to form blood clots. Without adequate vitamin K, even small injuries bleed longer and bruise more visibly. Most adults get enough vitamin K from leafy green vegetables, but people on restrictive diets or those with digestive conditions that impair nutrient absorption can fall short. Iron deficiency, which causes anemia, can also contribute to easier bruising because it affects how your blood carries oxygen and repairs tissue.
Underlying Health Conditions
Sometimes easy bruising signals something happening deeper in the body. A few conditions are worth knowing about.
Low Platelet Count
Platelets are the tiny blood cells that rush to an injury site and clump together to stop bleeding. A normal count ranges from about 150,000 to 400,000 per microliter of blood. When platelet counts drop to between 20,000 and 50,000, easy bruising becomes common, along with tiny red or purple dots on the skin (called petechiae) and prolonged bleeding from minor cuts. Low platelets can result from infections, autoimmune conditions, certain medications, or bone marrow problems.
Von Willebrand Disease
This is the most common inherited bleeding disorder, affecting up to 1% of the U.S. population, roughly 3.2 million people. Many don’t know they have it. Von Willebrand disease involves a deficiency or dysfunction in a specific protein your blood needs to clot. People with the condition often bruise easily, have heavy menstrual periods, and bleed longer after dental work or injuries. Diagnosis involves blood tests that measure clotting proteins and how well they function, along with a review of personal and family bleeding history.
Liver Disease
Your liver produces nearly all the proteins involved in forming blood clots. When the liver is damaged by chronic alcohol use, hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or other conditions, production of these clotting proteins drops. The result is blood that doesn’t clot efficiently, leading to bruises that appear more easily and take longer to resolve. If easy bruising comes alongside yellowing skin, abdominal swelling, or fatigue, liver function is worth evaluating.
What a Normal Bruise Looks Like
A typical bruise starts as a pinkish or red mark, shifts to dark blue or purple over the first day or two, then gradually fades through violet, green, dark yellow, and finally pale yellow before disappearing. The whole process takes about two weeks. This color progression reflects your body breaking down the hemoglobin that leaked from damaged blood vessels. Bruises on the legs sometimes take a bit longer to heal because of the increased blood pressure in your lower body.
If your bruises follow this general timeline and you can recall bumping into something, they’re almost certainly normal. The pattern to watch for is different.
Signs That Bruising May Need Evaluation
Not all bruising warrants concern, but certain patterns suggest an underlying bleeding disorder or other medical issue. Bruises that raise questions tend to be:
- Spontaneous: appearing without any injury or bump you can recall
- Numerous: more than five unexplained bruises at once
- Large: bigger than a centimeter (roughly the width of a pencil eraser) without a proportionate injury
- In unusual locations: the trunk, back, or face, rather than shins and arms where bumps are common
- Persistent: lasting well beyond the typical two-week healing window
If bruising is accompanied by frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in your urine or stool, or unusually heavy periods, those additional symptoms strengthen the case for blood work. Basic testing can check your platelet count, clotting time, and levels of key clotting proteins, which quickly narrows down whether something systemic is going on or whether your legs are simply doing what legs do in a world full of coffee tables and bed frames.
