Yeast Infection Causes: Candida, Antibiotics & More

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus that naturally lives on your skin and inside your body in small amounts. The most common species behind these infections is Candida albicans. Under normal conditions, your immune system and the balance of other microorganisms keep Candida in check. When something disrupts that balance, the fungus multiplies rapidly and causes symptoms.

How Candida Shifts From Harmless to Harmful

Candida exists in two forms. In its normal state, it lives as round, single-celled yeast that coexists peacefully with your body. But when environmental conditions change, it can transform into an aggressive form with long, branching filaments that penetrate tissue and trigger inflammation. This shift is what turns a harmless resident into an infection.

Several signals push Candida to make this switch: changes in pH (particularly when it rises above the slightly acidic range your body normally maintains), elevated temperature, and exposure to certain molecules in blood serum. These signals activate genes inside the fungus that promote its invasive behavior. Your body actively suppresses this transformation under healthy conditions, which is why most people carry Candida without ever developing symptoms.

The Role of Your Immune System

Your body has a layered defense system that keeps Candida under control. The cells lining the vaginal wall, for example, detect fungal invaders and release chemical signals that recruit immune cells to the area. Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, are the first responders. They arrive at the site of a potential infection and directly attack the fungus. Macrophages, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells provide additional backup.

These immune cells also produce antimicrobial peptides, small proteins with direct antifungal properties. When this system is working well, Candida stays in its harmless form and its population remains small. Anything that weakens or distracts these defenses opens the door for overgrowth.

Antibiotics Are a Leading Trigger

Taking antibiotics is one of the most common causes of yeast infections. Broad-spectrum antibiotics kill a wide range of bacteria, including the beneficial bacteria that normally live in the vagina and help keep Candida populations low. Lactobacillus, the dominant “good” bacteria in a healthy vagina, produces lactic acid that maintains an acidic environment (typically pH 3.8 to 4.5). This acidity discourages yeast from multiplying.

When antibiotics wipe out Lactobacillus, pH rises, acidity drops, and Candida faces less competition for space and nutrients. The result is rapid fungal growth. This is why yeast infections so frequently show up during or shortly after a course of antibiotics, particularly longer treatments or those targeting a broad range of bacteria.

High Blood Sugar Feeds the Fungus

Candida thrives in sugar-rich environments. People with type 2 diabetes or poorly controlled blood sugar face a significantly higher risk of yeast infections because elevated glucose in bodily tissues and secretions gives the fungus extra fuel to grow. Research confirms a causal relationship between type 2 diabetes and candidiasis, with hyperglycemia creating conditions that directly promote Candida proliferation.

This risk isn’t limited to people with a diabetes diagnosis. Any sustained period of high blood sugar, whether from diet, medication side effects, or prediabetes, can tip the balance. Maintaining stable blood sugar is one of the most effective ways to reduce recurrent infections if this is a contributing factor for you.

Hormonal Changes and Pregnancy

Estrogen plays a significant role in yeast infection risk. Higher estrogen levels increase the amount of glycogen (a form of stored sugar) in vaginal tissue, which can feed Candida. This is why yeast infections are more common during pregnancy, in the second half of the menstrual cycle, and among people taking high-dose estrogen birth control or hormone replacement therapy.

Pregnancy carries a particularly elevated risk because estrogen levels rise dramatically and the immune system partially dials back its activity to avoid rejecting the fetus. This combination of more fuel for the fungus and less aggressive immune surveillance creates ideal conditions for overgrowth.

Moisture, Clothing, and Environment

Candida grows best in warm, moist environments, which is why the areas it most commonly infects (the vagina, groin, skin folds, mouth) share those conditions. Tight-fitting synthetic clothing traps heat and moisture against the skin, creating a more hospitable environment for fungal growth. In one study of patients with recurrent fungal infections, 56% regularly wore tight synthetic undergarments.

The research also found that fungal elements can survive in clothing even after washing. Among unwashed garments from affected patients, 44% tested positive for fungal organisms. Even after laundering, 30% of samples still showed viable fungal elements. Wearing breathable, cotton underwear and changing out of wet clothing promptly reduces this risk. The goal is simply to keep the area dry and ventilated.

Weakened Immunity

Any condition or treatment that suppresses your immune system raises the likelihood of yeast infections. This includes HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, organ transplant medications, and long-term corticosteroid use. Because your immune cells are the primary barrier keeping Candida in its harmless form, reduced immune function allows the fungus to shift into its invasive state more easily and multiply without resistance.

Even temporary immune dips from stress, sleep deprivation, or illness can be enough to trigger an episode in someone who is otherwise prone to yeast infections.

Which Candida Species Are Involved

Candida albicans remains the leading cause of yeast infections overall, but it’s not the only species involved. Five species account for up to 95% of Candida bloodstream infections in the United States: C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, and C. krusei. In bloodstream infections specifically, non-albicans species now cause roughly two-thirds of cases.

This matters because different species respond differently to antifungal medications. C. glabrata, for example, is naturally less sensitive to the most commonly prescribed antifungal drugs. If standard treatment isn’t clearing your infection, the species involved may be the reason. Candida auris, a newer species tracked separately by the CDC, has drawn attention for its tendency to resist multiple antifungal medications.

Recurrent Yeast Infections

Recurrent yeast infections are defined as three or more symptomatic episodes within a single year. This affects fewer than 5% of women, but for those it does affect, the impact on quality of life and the cost of treatment are substantial. Recurrence typically signals an underlying factor that hasn’t been addressed: uncontrolled blood sugar, ongoing antibiotic use, a resistant Candida species, or a subtle immune deficiency.

Clothing habits can also contribute to the cycle. Because fungal organisms can persist in undergarments even after washing, reinfection from contaminated clothing is a real possibility in chronic cases. People dealing with recurrent infections often benefit from a broader evaluation that looks beyond the infection itself to the environmental and metabolic factors sustaining it.
